The Noise and Air pollution in environment may produce undesirable effects on our health and surrounding environment. In order to assess the ambient air quality and noise level during Deepawali at various locations of state capital Dehradun, the Uttrakhand Environment & Pollution Control Board, Dehradun and Regional Office Haldwani has conducted survey of ambient air quality and noise level. The findings of survey is given in table 1,2, 3.4,5 & 6.

1. The Noise level values monitored on pre Deepawali day (8/1107) during the day time indicates exceeding the values higher side in comparison to prescribed limit. The Locations were values found exceeding the limits are Survey Chock 74.72 dB(A), Clock Tower 71.7 dB(A), Doon Hospital 62.5 dB(A), Prince Chawak 78.9 dB(A), Saharanpur Chawak 80.4 dB(A) and ISBT 76.0 dB(A). The Noise level values at CMI Chawak and Rispana brige indicates slightly higher side 64.0 dB(A) and 56.8 dB(A) respectively

2. On Deepawali (09.11.2007), the Noise level values at Doon Hospital increases up to 74.2 dB(A) in compare to value 62.5 dB(A) on pre Deepawali day. The Noise level values at other location indicates almost lower then noise level value obtained on pre Deepawali day.

3. The noise level values on 10.11.07 post Deepawali indicates less value in compression to pre Deepawali day and Deepawali day, but all values obtained at all locations are exceeding the values prescribed for noise level

1. On dted 08.11.07 the noise level values monitored during night time indicates maximum noise level at Saharanpur chawak 80 dB(A),Prince Chawak 70.9 dB(A), ISBT 76 dB(A) and Survey chawak 74.72 dB(A). While values obtained in other locations are higher then prescribed limit but are slightly higher side.

2. On Dipawali day (9/11/07) the noise level values obtained during night time indicates as much higher values hen prescribe limit. CMI Chawak 75.5 dB(A), Survey Chawak 80.9 dB(A), Clock tower 77.9 dB(A), Doon hospital 71.9 dB(A), Prince Chawak 74.8 dB(A), Saharanpur Chawak 75.5 dB(A), ISBT 71.8 dB(A) and Respana bridge 75.5 dB(A).

3. The Noise level values obtained on post Dipawali day indicates lesser noise level values in compare to values obtained on Deepawali day, like Survay Chawak 70.8 dB(A), Clock Tower 64.4dB(A), Prince Chawak 67.0 dB(A), Saharanpur Chawak 70.2 dB(A), Rispana bridge 68.5 dB(A), ISBT 65.0 dB(A), Doon Hospital 62.0 dB(A) and CMI Chawak 66.9 dB(A). The Noise level values on post Deepawali day was also indicates higher than the prescribed values.

1. The ambient air quality monitoring result at Clock Tower on pre Dipawali day indicates that the gaseous values (Sulphur Di Oxide and Oxide of Nitrogen)are lesser (SO2 35.0 µg/m3 & NO2 43.8 µg/m3 )then prescribed limit 80 given in Ambient Air Quality Standards, but the values of Suspended Particulate Matter indicates higher values (441.8 µg/m3) which is double to the National Ambient Air Quality standards (200 µg/m3).

2. The values obtained on Deepawali day also indicates that the gaseous values are lesser ( SO2 38.5 µg/m3 & NO2 43.8 µg/m3)than the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (80 µg/m3). The Suspended Particulate Matter values indicates (538.8 µg/m3) which is higher than limit and value is quite higher than value obtained on pre Deepawali day.

3. The values obtained on 10/11/07 post Deepawali day also indicates that the gaseous values are lesser ( SO2 31.5 µg/m3 & NO2 41.4 µg/m3)than the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (80 µg/m3). The Suspended Particulate Matter values also indicates (439.9 µg/m3) which is higher than limit and value is almost equal to value obtained on pre Deepawali day

The ambient air quality data in respect of Suspended Particulate Matter at Awas Vikas Colony indicates that exceeding the values of ambient air quality standards on all days of pre Deepawali, Deepawali and post Deepawali. and Values of Suspended Particulate at Kaladungi Chaurah also indicated higher values than ambient air quality standards

The noise level monitoring values for day time indicates that at all locations the noise level was found higher than the prescribed limits. the values obtained on Deepawali indicates higher then pre Deepawali and post Deepawali which is as Awas Vikas colony 81.1 dB(A), Nirmala Convent School 81.4 dB(A), Kalwati Colony 81.4 dB(A), Chawak Bazar 87.2dB(A), SS Zeena hospital 82.3dB(A) and Bus Station 82.9 dB(A).

The values obtained during night time indicates exceeding the prescribed limit on all the day. On Deepawali day the values indicates higher value which is as Awas Vikas Colony79.8dB(A), Nirmala Convent School 74.5 dB(A). Kalawati Colony 79.7 dB(A) , Chawak Bazar 79.8 dB(A), SS Zeena Hospital 73.5 dB(A) and Bus station 74.4 dB(A).
